about
“Leavingsinkingfeeling is a song that I wrote about leaving my partner in Australia when I
moved to the US in 2017, but more broadly it’s about that feeling you get just before you’re
about to leave - whether it’s the end of a job you love, or the end of studying abroad, or the
end of summer camp, or the end of a relationship. Everyone is hugging you for longer,
saying their goodbyes and saying things like ‘until next time’ and ‘I’ll miss you’ over
celebratory meals or drinks. It kind of feels like this weird limbo where you’re being pulled to
the future whilst clinging desperately to the past. I’ve experienced it a lot in my life - whether
it was leaving my oldest brother behind in the UK when my family moved to Australia when I
was younger, or leaving my high school girlfriend behind when I moved from the Gold Coast
to Melbourne at the end of high school or in the instance I describe in the song, when I
moved from Melbourne to the US. It’s this weird middle ground between melancholy and
anticipation where it feels like nothing really matters anymore cause you’re leaving
everything behind.”
lyrics
I can’t believe how far we’ve come, we fell in love in the last six months
It was supposed to be a bit of fun, nothing serious - now it’s tearing me apart
Cause my plane flies out in a week
And I told you I have to go
Now we’re crying before we sleep
And I don’t wanna let it show
But I can’t get rid of this leaving sinking feeling
I shoulda left on the weekend in secret
Cause I can’t deal with last meals anymore
Before I left you gave me a story you wrote. You were a leaf and I was the wind
We were in love till we turned into dust. I’ve never seen such a beautiful parting gift
And how are we supposed to spend the painful days before the end
I’ll try to make the most but it’s too late to pretend
I can’t get rid of this leaving sinking feeling
I shoulda left on the weekend in secret
Cause I can’t deal with last meals anymore
Can’t get rid of this leaving sinking feeling
